Papanași Bracelet
After spending a month in Romania, it's difficult to precisely articulate their cuisine, but it doesn't clash with Taiwanese palates. Having once been part of the Ottoman Empire, their seasoning is more layered and Asian-inspired compared to Western Europe. I particularly enjoy pork and chicken dishes, and am open to blanched leafy greens, as well as time-consuming yet exquisite stewed soups.
Papanași is a traditional dessert from Romania and Moldova, consisting of a large ring of dough combined with a smaller ball of dough on top. It's deep-fried and then drizzled with jam, powdered sugar, or fresh sour cream. The first bite was reminiscent of the Taiwanese "old-fashioned" market donuts, but the added fruity tang of the cream melted away, introducing an exotic flavor from eight thousand kilometers away to the familiar comfort of home.

**Snowfall in Transylvania Series**
Transylvania, in west-central Romania, is a familiar yet distant presence in classical and fairy tale literature, its Latin name meaning "across the forest." Before 2017, I had never seen it, only knowing its imposing castles and dark, dense forests from vampire films. Meeting my boyfriend from there finally gave me an excuse to travel. I arrived in Romania during the harsh winter, with days of continuous rain. I spent some time wandering through the old city districts, where past opulence was still faintly visible, experiencing a Christmas deeply connected to religion. Then, leaving the crowds, I ventured from the vast green plains towards the higher hills and mountains. Having never truly seen snow, I remember staring, mesmerized, at the snow-covered fir trees along the winding mountain roads. The branches, reaching towards the sky, held the falling snow, reflecting the clear afternoon sun. It was as if an unseen hand had decorated a Christmas tree with golden ribbons, scattering a generous amount of fine gold dust.
I spent a month immersed in this Eastern European country, quite uncommon for Asians, and have long yearned to revisit it in different seasons. This year, with the travel bans imposed by the pandemic, I particularly miss that tranquil, fertile land embraced by the Carpathian Mountains, the Byzantine hymns, and the wild, white snow.
