Water-ground cinnabar, Emperor cinnabar, Purple-gold cinnabar, and Crystal cinnabar all belong to high-content quality cinnabar. Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and manufacturing methods**.
**「Water-ground cinnabar (水飞砂)」**
**A true red, with a slight orange undertone. The surface has a warm, matte finish that will become more lustrous with wear, developing a patina over time.**
The manufacturing method involves repeatedly grinding cinnabar into fine particles to form a paste, adding water, stirring, and then collecting the upper "turbid liquid" after settling. This is followed by further settling and precipitation (the water-grinding purification method). The cinnabar mud at the bottom is then air-dried and pressed using ancient methods. Even on the cross-section, uniform, fine mineral flashes can be seen.
**「Emperor cinnabar (帝王砂)」**
**The color is closer to true red, with a brighter hue and higher hardness.**
The manufacturing process involves crushing, grinding, magnetic separation, water-grinding, and high polishing from natural cinnabar ore through multiple purification steps, then pressed using ancient methods. Emperor cinnabar has almost no mineral flashes on the surface, but has them internally. The surface is treated with **high polishing** to achieve a metallic luster, especially under sunlight, giving it a strong metallic feel.
**「Purple-gold cinnabar (紫金砂)」**
**The color is a purplish-red, and the hardness is slightly lower than Emperor cinnabar.**
The manufacturing process involves crushing, grinding, and screening from natural cinnabar ore through multiple steps, but **without water-grinding purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as fine and has scattered, small mineral flash particles, creating a "starry sky" effect.
**「Crystal cinnabar (晶体砂)」**
**The color is purplish-red and translucent.**
Large cinnabar particles are directly chipped from cinnabar ore. Large crystal particles are clearly visible on the surface, and under light, each particle is transparent, emitting a fluorescent red glow.

**> Cinnabar**
The earliest documented records refer to cinnabar by a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is a pictographic character; ancient miners dug shafts into the ground to extract minerals. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying something extracted from a mine. This something is cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dānshā) became known as "朱砂" (zhūshā). "丹" and "朱" describe the color, while "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregularly shaped mineral particles.
The color of cinnabar is unfading. Chinese calligraphy and painting are known as "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is also an indispensable ingredient in "eight treasures seal paste," the main component of which is cinnabar.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that have gathered the essence of the sun and moon, absorbing the pure energy of heaven and earth. Therefore, cinnabar possesses a very strong yang magnetic field. We can observe that jade feels cool in the hand, while cinnabar feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in Daoist rituals for drawing talismans, consecrating objects, warding off evil spirits, and suppressing malevolent energies. Cinnabar has always been regarded as an excellent item for improving luck, warding off evil, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of great fortune, prosperity, and well-being.
The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior herb, often used in medicinal treatments to calm the spirit, detoxify, and alleviate insomnia and excessive dreaming.
For us living in modern times, owning a piece or two of cinnabar art can also help cultivate one's character, nourish the eyes and heart.
**> Identification**
**All cinnabar products in this store are high-content cinnabar with a strong sense of weight. You can use the following methods for identification:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat indirectly. It is generally not recommended to burn finished products directly, as it is difficult to control the time and area. Prolonged heating may cause irreversible blackening.)
>. Genuine cinnabar can draw orangish-red lines on paper. (To avoid damaging the appearance of the finished product, please draw on an inconspicuous area or use the gifted bead to draw.)
**> Maintenance**
**If cinnabar jewelry does not have metal or plant-based accessories (such as wood, bamboo, bodhi seeds, etc.), it can be exposed to a small amount of water, but prolonged soaking is not recommended as it will affect the luster.**
**Braided cord styles are not recommended to get wet. After washing, they should be air-dried before wearing, as wearing damp cords can lead to excessive moisture, which is not ideal for health.**
1. Avoid corrosion
Cinnabar is a mineral and does not dissolve in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals like soap and shower gel can cause corrosion.
2. Avoid contact with metal objects
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling and blackening.
3. Avoid high temperatures
The mercuric sulfide component in cinnabar will only release at temperatures above 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as you avoid exposing cinnabar jewelry to high-temperature environments, you can wear it with confidence.
4. Avoid collision with hard or sharp objects.
Cinnabar has high hardness but is brittle, so be careful to prevent drops.
5. How to clean
If the cinnabar appears dirty, do not soak it in water, as this will alter its original luster! You can wipe it gently a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and let it air dry for a while.
6. Oil polishing method
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product, allowing the surface to absorb the oil and become more crystal clear and bright. If you apply oil and then seal it in a brocade box, you can wrap it in a common plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the brocade box lining.
7. Frequent handling
Frequently handle the cinnabar jewelry worn on your body with your hands, allowing the surface to absorb a thin layer of oil. Over time, it will appear more ancient and elegant.
The physical product is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
