Since the Victorian era, it has been customary to place a three-pence or six-pence coin into Christmas pudding, with the belief that whoever finds the coin will be blessed with good fortune in the coming year.
"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe.” In Britain, the sixpence also carries a wish for love and happiness in marriage.
During World War II, the British Royal Air Force would sew sixpence coins into their uniforms as lucky charms.
▰▰▰▰▰▰
The British sixpence was first issued during the reign of Edward VI in 1551. Coins minted between 1551 and 1947 were made of silver and remained in circulation until 1980. After decimalization in 1971, its value was equivalent to £0.025.
The shop owner has selected 1967, the final year this coin was minted, and the last edition featuring Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse in 1953. The reverse design, created by Edgar Fuller and Cecil Thomas in 1947, depicts four floral emblems representing the constituent countries of the United Kingdom: the rose, thistle, shamrock, and leek. It is hoped that this coin will bring collectors luck and good fortune in the New Year ☺️
