Every child carries forward the river of their mother. Among the women of the Tai Phuan ethnic group in Laos, an ancient, secret craft has been passed down through generations, transforming the essence of life into flowing rivers on woven cloth. Sun, rivers and oceans, mountains, soil, flora, and fauna— deep within nature, we are never separate from the whole. ≈∞≈∞≈∞≈∞≈∞≈∞≈∞≈∞≈∞≈∞≈∞≈∞≈∞ Ikat weaving is a heritage of ancient human wisdom. These unique patterns do not begin their creation on the loom. Long before dyeing the threads, the position of the intended overall pattern is calculated, and the yarn is bound with ties to resist the dye. It is then repeatedly immersed, pounded, and sun-dried in plant-based dye baths 10 to 15 times, layering the colors of the sun and nature into the threads.
