This Art Deco pendant necklace from 1920s Germany is crafted from silver and silver gilt, adorned with citrine and moonstone.
The pendant originates from Meyle & Mayer (1887-1945), a highly esteemed design house in Pforzheim, Germany. Renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship and exquisite jewelry design, this workshop was celebrated for its intricate details and sophisticated color palettes. Tragically, the Meyle & Mayer workshop was destroyed during World War II in 1945 and never reopened, making its surviving pieces exceptionally rare and highly collectible.
Nestled near the Black Forest, the German town of Pforzheim, known as the "City of Gold," was one of Germany's most prosperous towns before WWII. From the late 18th to the early 20th century, Pforzheim's mastery of gilding, gold processing, and its strategic location established it as a European jewelry hub, securing a significant place in jewelry history. This flourishing industry nurtured numerous talented jewelers and factories, including Meyle & Mayer and Grossé, the manufacturer for Dior, familiar to fashion jewelry enthusiasts.
The pendant features delicate filigree work with a perfectly symmetrical composition, subtly enhanced by the shimmer of moonstone. At its center, a clear, luminous citrine is set in an open-back style, creating a magnificent golden glow against the silver gilt base. The accompanying Y-chain mirrors the pendant's delicate, airy filigree, embodying the prestige of the "City of Gold."
This piece is in good antique condition, showing normal signs of oxidation and wear consistent with its age, as expected for a century-old treasure.
