When the May Fourth Movement broke out, he received funding from his eldest brother to study in France, where he lived until his death in 1966, mostly in the Montparnasse art district. Due to its unique cultural background, its creations often show a connection between tradition and modernity, and between Eastern and Western art. By the 1920s, people had still not forgotten the pain brought by World War I, which made them tend to enjoy the present rather than look forward to the future. But it was precisely this mentality that broke the established social restrictions, and many new trends and fashions followed, such as the Art Deco trend and the miniskirt in the fashion world. People also began to be interested in porcelain, wood, and jade from the East. As an international art center, Paris attracted people from different regions and promoted exchanges between the East and the West. The free and open atmosphere formed the "Paris School", and Chang Yu was one of the representatives of the Paris School.
