Shuifei Sand, Imperial Cinnabar, Zijing Sand, and Crystal Sand are all high-quality cinnabar. Their **primary differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods**.
**「Shuifei Sand」**
**A true red with a slight orange undertone. It has a warm, matte luster that becomes brighter with wear, developing a patina over time.**
The production method involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, mixing with water, letting it settle, and collecting the upper "turbid liquid." This liquid is then left to settle again for purification (the Shuifei method). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried and then formed using ancient pressing techniques. The cross-section still reveals fine, uniform mineral sparkles.
**「Imperial Cinnabar」**
**A brighter, more vivid red with higher hardness.**
The production method involves multiple processes from natural raw cinnabar ore, including **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/Shuifei/high polishing**, to gradually purify it before ancient pressing. Imperial Cinnabar has almost no surface mineral sparkles but has them internally. The surface undergoes a **high polishing** process to achieve a metallic luster, especially in sunlight, enhancing its metallic feel.
**「Zijing Sand」**
**A purplish-red hue with slightly lower hardness than Imperial Cinnabar.**
The production method involves multiple processes from natural raw cinnabar ore, including **crushing/grinding/screening**, but **without the Shuifei purification**. Therefore, the surface is less refined and features small, scattered mineral sparkles, creating a "starry sky" effect.
**「Crystal Sand」**
**A purplish-red color that is translucent.**
These are large cinnabar particles directly chipped from cinnabar ore. The surface clearly shows large crystalline grains. When illuminated, each piece is transparent, emitting a fluorescent red glow.
**> Spring Plowing, Autumn Harvest**

**> Cinnabar**
The earliest textual records refer to cinnabar with a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is an ideogram. In ancient times, mines were dug, and minerals were extracted from within. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng - well) with a dot in the middle, signifying the extraction of something from a dug mine – this something is cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dān shā) became known as cinnabar. "丹" and "朱" describe the color, and "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregular, granular minerals.
The color of cinnabar is unfading. Chinese calligraphy and painting are known as "丹青" (dān qīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is an indispensable component of "Eight Treasures Seal Paste."
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that gather the essence of the sun and moon, absorbing the pure energy of heaven and earth. Therefore, cinnabar possesses a strong positive energy magnetic field. We observe that jade feels cool to the touch, while cinnabar feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in various Taoist rituals, such as drawing talismans, consecrating objects, warding off evil spirits, and subduing negative energies. Cinnabar has always been revered as a supreme material for enhancing luck, dispelling negativity, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of great fortune and prosperous well-being.
The *Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* (The Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior ingredient, often used in medicinal treatments for its properties in calming the spirit, detoxifying, and alleviating insomnia with excessive dreaming.
For us living in modern times, owning a piece or two of cinnabar art can also cultivate self-discipline and nourish the eyes and heart.
**> Identification**
**All cinnabar products in our store are high-content cinnabar with a significant weight. You can use the following methods for identification:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat it through an intermediary object. It is generally not recommended to burn finished products directly, as controlling the time and area is difficult. Over-burning will cause it to turn black and become irreparable.)
>. Genuine cinnabar can draw an orange-red line on paper. (To avoid damaging the appearance of the finished product, please choose an inconspicuous area for the line, or use the complimentary bead for marking.)
**> Care**
1. Avoid corrosion.
Cinnabar is a mineral and insoluble in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals like soap and shower gel can corrode cinnabar.
2. Avoid contact with metal objects.
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling and blackening.
3. Avoid high temperatures.
The mercuric sulfide in cinnabar will only be released at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as you avoid exposing cinnabar jewelry to high-temperature environments, you can wear it with peace of mind.
4. Avoid collisions with hard or sharp objects.
Cinnabar is hard but brittle; be careful to prevent drops.
5. How to clean.
If you find your cinnabar is dirty, do not soak it in water, as this can alter its original luster! You can wipe it a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and let it air dry.
6. Oiling for maintenance.
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product, allowing the stone surface to absorb the oil, making it more crystal clear and bright. If applying oil, seal it in a brocade box, possibly wrapping it in plastic film to prevent the oil from staining the box lining.
7. Frequent handling.
Frequently handle the cinnabar jewelry you wear with your hands, allowing a thin layer of oil to coat the surface. Over time, it will appear more antique and elegant.
The actual item is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
