Taoism believes that humans are born with original sin, thus they must bear a cangue, symbolizing their transgressions, to sincerely repent and seek the Lord of the City's absolution. Before the Lord of the City's procession on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, the Yin Yang Si Gong, who serves as the Lord of the City's assistant, or Secretary-General, first proceeds to the "North Altar" to hear complaints from lonely souls and wandering spirits. On the way to the North Altar, believers carrying paper cangues walk before the palanquin of the Yin Yang Si Gong, much like ancient criminals paraded through the streets. Finally, a Taoist priest personally recites a memorial for each person, removes the cangue, and performs its cremation, completing the "uncangling" ritual, symbolizing the smooth elimination of a year's misfortunes and bad luck.
