Artist: David Hockney
David Hockney is a pivotal artist who rose to prominence in Britain during the 1960s. Even as a student at the Royal College of Art in London, he made his mark. Alongside fellow students and senior peers like Allen Jones and R.B. Kitaj, he participated in the 1961 "Young Contemporaries" exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, co-founding the British Pop Art movement.
In 1964, Hockney relocated from London to Los Angeles, where the Californian lifestyle became a recurring theme in his art. His canvases depicted rolling hills, swimming pools, and modernist architecture, often imbued with homoerotic undertones. Hockney also explored landscapes extensively, including his 1980s landscape paintings, Polaroid collages, large-format landscape murals, and stage designs. In recent years, he has embraced the iPad as a medium, continuing his exploration of visual perception, space, and technology.
Major retrospective exhibitions at Tate Britain, the Centre Pompidou, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art have celebrated Hockney's enduring artistic career. Now in his eighties, he remains a prolific creator, with his works held in prestigious institutions globally, including the British Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Hayward Gallery at the Southbank Centre in London.
David Hockney is cherished by many for his ability to connect with the ordinary – the world is largely made up of these simple things. He enjoys allowing these elements to float a little, inviting us to participate, as Hockney not only provides a subject but also engages us in interpreting the scene ourselves.
We are transported back to 1964 when a 27-year-old David Hockney moved from England to sunny California. The environment of the American West Coast inspired him to paint numerous images of swimming pools, with or without people, often rendered in delicate shades of pink, light blue, or pale green.
Today, David Hockney resides in Normandy, where he continuously experiments with materials, capturing the local mood with his signature fluid lines and confident use of color.
Difference with Acrylic:
》With Acrylic = Added layer of protection = Increased reflectivity
》Without Acrylic = Less protection = Direct appreciation of the artwork's texture, offering a superior viewing experience
Unsure how to choose? (If you have children at home, adding acrylic is recommended.) (If the household consists only of adults, you may opt for no acrylic.)
