▰▰▰▰▰▰AMITA▰▰▰▰▰▰
Founded in Kobe in 1932, Amita re-established its Damascene factory in Kyoto in 1946, after World War II. In 1952, the Japanese government officially designated Amita Damascene Co., Ltd. as an export retailer (duty-free shop). They produced many items for export to the West, allowing the curator to acquire some Japanese pieces from Western collections.
The art of metal inlay can be traced back over 2,000 years to Damascus, the capital of Syria. It later entered the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 8th century with the Moorish invasion, and at the same time, it arrived in Japan via the Silk Road.
Using iron or copper alloy as the base, fine lines are engraved on the surface. Thin sheets of pure gold and silver are then crafted into patterns and hammered into the base. The process involves lacquering and firing to prevent oxidation and rust of the base metal, followed by sanding and polishing. Finally, intricate micro-engraving techniques are applied before the pieces are set into jewelry.
