■ About Onyx
Stone Language: Inner beauty, patience, control, reason.
A variety of chalcedony with a Mohs hardness of 7, belonging to the hexagonal crystal system. It is a black variety of quartz or chalcedony formed by layers of mineral deposits precipitating in the cavities of igneous or sedimentary rocks. Its name originates from the Greek word for "claw." Legend has it that it was formed from the nail of the goddess Venus falling into the Indus River. It is mentioned among the nine precious stones in the Old Testament's Book of Exodus, appearing on the shoulder pieces of the ephod and the breastplate of the high priest.
When Queen Victoria of England wore black jet, its elegance and femininity became popular, leading to a trend of black accessories in Europe.
As onyx is more widely available than jet, black onyx is now often used as a substitute for shorl (black tourmaline) or jet (fossilized wood).
■ About Charoite
Stone Language: Enchantment, intuition, breaking with the past.
It is named after the Charo River basin in Siberia, where it was first mined. Also known as the "gem of enchantment" or "Russian marble." It has been used as a material for carving since ancient times. It has a very complex chemical composition and is said to contain trace amounts of water. Its Mohs hardness is 5-6. Its pale purple hue is due to manganese impurities, along with other impurities like barium, strontium, and rare earth elements. It is estimated to have formed between 1.45 million and 125 million years ago. It is found exclusively in the Murun Massif in the Sakha Republic of the Russian Federation, and its deposits are said to be depleting.
