The original stones for lithographic printing are said to be found only in Solenhofen, southern Germany. This printing technique was invented in 1798 by the Austrian composer Alois Senefelder (1771-1834) and is considered the origin of planographic printing. Because the printing process was quite labor-intensive, requiring the original artwork to be redrawn after each print, it was eventually phased out by the printing industry! Consequently, each printed illustration is as detailed as a hand-drawn piece. To this day, the value of each print is almost equivalent to that of an artwork. Although this technique has been superseded in the printing industry, it has been preserved by printmakers. Some printmakers still use this printing method today to create their works.
