KAVALAN: 3952 Laōshānyáng - Named after an ancient place name in Yilan, Taiwan, this is an elegant, essential writing instrument. The pen body is made from the highly popular and distinctive Oriental Oak wood, also known as "chicken wing wood." This imported premium timber features a cut surface pattern resembling a chicken's wing, hence its nickname. Its color ranges from dark brown to chestnut brown, showcasing unique pores and natural grain patterns. The wood grain will vary, making each piece unique (this model is perfect for those who appreciate the natural beauty of solid wood). The pen is fitted with an air-tight, rotating cap and accessories featuring an antique brass-plated aluminum alloy with a water-ripple rhombic carving pattern.
Oriental Oak wood is favored by the Japanese for its hardness. The heartwood is dark brown to purplish-black, and its resistance to decay, moisture, and pests makes it suitable for construction, furniture, carving, and musical instruments. It was also historically known as "railway wood" because it was the primary material for railway sleepers in early Taiwan, giving it this name.
The nib utilizes a German Bock #250 (#6) dual-toned steel nib, which has been meticulously hand-ground and modified by Laōshānyáng artisans into a calligraphy nib capable of producing varied line widths with the expressive charm of a brushstroke.
**Gift Set Includes:** German SCHMIDT K2 converter (ink not included) + one handmade black genuine leather pen sleeve by a Taiwanese master craftsman (style shipped randomly) + a premium 3952 Laōshānyáng presentation box.
Dimensions: Length 148mm, Cap Diameter 15.9mm, Barrel Diameter 14.1mm, Barrel with Nib 130mm, Weight approx. 43 grams.
Hand-tuned Calligraphy Nib:
1. For calligraphy nibs, it is generally recommended to first dip the nib in ink and allow it to condition for a period before using a converter.
2. If you experience ink flow interruption with a converter, check your grip angle. Ensure both iridium points touch the paper simultaneously; avoid writing on one side. If flow issues persist, check the nib for paper fibers or debris.
3. Remove the converter and try filling ink directly by capillary action.
4. Rinse the nib thoroughly. If the iridium points are misaligned or you apply excessive pressure, it can lead to misalignment, causing scratching and paper debris buildup in the nib slit.
5. Our calligraphy nibs are adjusted from EF tips to have a curved profile. Line width variation is achieved through the angle of the pen, not by pressing down. By utilizing the nib's curve, you can create different line widths. Holding the pen more upright reduces the contact area with the paper, resulting in finer lines. A more angled grip increases the contact area, producing broader strokes. Achieving consistent line variation depends on your skill and practice.
In response to environmental protection, we do not provide paper bags proactively. If you require one for gifting purposes, please specify this in the order notes after placing your order. Thank you.

Note: To maintain the pen body and cap, and the antique brass-plated accessories, regular wiping and maintenance are recommended. When storing the pen, avoid prolonged downward storage of the nib.
Warm Reminder: Avoid pressing down on the nib or writing skewed to the left or right (for right-handed users, aim for the 10 or 11 o'clock direction with the nib tip) to prevent accidental misalignment of the iridium points, which can cause scratching and ink flow issues. Regularly rinse the nib with clean water to prevent ink clogging and maintain writing quality.
Helpful Tip: For the antique brass-plated fittings, frequent wiping and maintenance are advised. Over time, with exposure to hand sweat, they will naturally oxidize, developing a patina that resembles antique brass.
