About Wood Firing "Wood firing" is a traditional kiln firing method where wood is used to heat the kiln to temperatures exceeding 1200 degrees Celsius. This process leaves natural "fire marks" from the direct contact with wood, as well as ash that settles on the piece during combustion. This results in a warm, rich color palette with diverse variations that electric or gas kilns simply cannot achieve. Compared to conventional electric and gas kilns, wood firing—from stacking the kiln, ignition, sealing the kiln, to the cooling process—takes approximately 8 to 10 days. Furthermore, the high internal pressure of a wood-fired kiln, along with factors such as humidity, wood dryness, the speed of stoking the fire, and the placement within the kiln, can all influence the success or failure of a piece, leading to a higher rate of breakage. Experienced wood-firing artists carefully consider airflow dynamics when stacking the kiln. They meticulously plan the placement of pieces of varying sizes, estimate the ascent of the flame path, manage the stoking of wood and charcoal, and control the intensity of the fire.
