Scarf Bronze Basin with Coiled Dragon Décor-Red

The proper name for this type of vessel is p'an as confirmed by the inscription on this piece. The function of the p'an basin was to hold water used for ablution as part of ritual ceremonies. As a rule Shang dynasty p'ans are without handles. The broad basin rests on a high circular foot. The primary design depicts a bottled-horned dragon its head in the center of the vessel and its body coiling around the outside. The space between the dragon's coils and around the rim is filled with smaller dragon forms and fish motifs. These subordinate creatures all fall within the category of aquatic beasts appropriate for a water vessel and for accompanying a dragon design.
