This set of 2 placemats is made from jute that has been planted by local artisans in Chanthaburi. It is very common to make reed mat for Thai villagers. It is widely grown in all places which differ from jute that has limited of plantation area and could only grow during summer. So, we come up with the idea to show off the hidden material of reed mat. That is JUTE!! Jute is rarely found in traditional Thai rug because it has more complicate process to produce than synthetic or reed. Since the complexity of making one spindle of jute yarn takes time. Jute does not come as a yarn after harvesting. Its process is similar to cotton. - We have to peel only its skin and leave it dry under sunlight for a week. - When it is totally dry, they will bring into grinding process. - Next is the spinning process to make a spindle of jute yarn. - Lastly, we have to stretch jute as a warp of handloom to start mat weaving by inserting weft into the loom. - Pattern is created through color dyeing, mixing material between warp and weft, and weaving techniques. Jute usually use as a structure/warp of the rug since it is durable and stronger than reed. Somehow, new generation mat making mostly use nylon rather than jute because of the cost saving, the complexity of production, the limitation of natural material. All process has been carefully done by hand which can be noticed from the uneven texture. However, it shows the unique and quality of Thai craftsmanship transforming ordinary plants into stylish placemats.
