He served in the Imperial Painting Academy during the Xianfeng era (mid-19th century). He excelled at portraiture and was also skilled in painting flowers, birds, and landscapes. His reputation as a painter was highly esteemed, and Empress Dowager Cixi once bestowed upon him a plaque inscribed with "Master of Capturing the Spirit."
