【LAI HAO】Grandma Qiezi Retro Triangular Pouch (Red / Green / Blue) - Coin Purses - Plastic

Product Description

On Wikipedia, the Qiezi bag is defined as follows: “Tai-ke bag, originally called ka-tsì (Taiwanese Romanization: ka-tsì, pronounced similar to 'ga-ji'), also known as ka-tsián-á, kao-tsián-á, Qiezi bag, or retro bag, is a type of traditional Taiwanese tote bag. The upper part is slightly wider than the bottom and can be used as a school bag, document holder, or handbag. The name originates from the Japanese word かぎ編み (kagiami), referring to its crochet or weaving technique. The Qiezi bag is said to have originated in Jingliao Village, Houbi District, Tainan City. It was initially handwoven from rush grass and called a grass bag. With the advancement of industrialization in Taiwan, it later evolved into a semi-transparent nylon mesh tote.” There has long been debate about what the proper name for this iconic Taiwanese bag should be. Currently, most government agencies and private organizations in Taiwan use the term “Qiezi Bag” as the standard name. However, some online discussions have suggested that the original and correct name should be “Jiā-jǔ (葭苴)”. The character “葭” refers to young reed plants, and “苴” refers to straw mats once used as inner soles in ancient footwear—both closely related to the bag’s original material: rush grass (蘭草). In contrast, the name “Qiezi” (茄芷) is likely a phonetic reinterpretation, chosen for ease of reading and writing. Abroad, the Japanese refer to the Qiezi bag as “漁師バッグ” ("Fisherman's Bag"), due to its resemblance to the nets used by fishermen. In Korea, it's known as “대만 전통 가방”, meaning “Traditional Taiwanese Bag.” In English, it’s often romanized as “KA-TSI,” following the Taiwanese pronunciation. Regardless of its name, the Qiezi bag has long played a quiet, practical role in the everyday lives of Taiwanese people. The bag’s origin traces back to Wumiler Community in Houbi, Tainan, a rural village that gained fame through the documentary Wumiler. This documentary not only revitalized tourism in the region but also breathed new life into the red, blue, and green Qiezi bags through the work of Grandma Qiezi Workshop, which uses local elements to elevate community culture and preserve this humble yet iconic tradition. Grandma Qiezi Workshop transforms traditional Qiezi patterns into a variety of charming everyday items with skillful hands — from compact triangle pouches for coins to eco-friendly bottle holders and lunch bags. The woven material is extremely lightweight, durable, and practical. In 2018, the Tainan City Government selected their handmade Qiezi bags as National Day gifts, reminding us of the enduring wisdom of traditional crafts. Please note: Since all items are handmade, the color of the zippers and Qiezi mesh may vary slightly in tone. Current stock features light-colored zippers, such as light red, light green, and light blue. ➤ Product Information: Style: Retro Triangle Storage Pouch (Red / Green / Blue) Material: PE Plastic Dimensions: Triangle Side Length 11 cm Origin: Designed and Made in Taiwan
