Sinbad's Seven Voyages to the Land of Sinbad
A fantastical adventure film the designer watched as a child.
One of the characters was a cyclops,
brought to life through stop-motion animation at the time.
Its confrontation and struggle with intruders,
with no dialogue save for roars,
thrilled the young Yuan-bao,
a memory that remains unforgettable.
Looking back now,
Yuan-bao ponders the cyclops's motivations:
was it instinctual resistance to intruders,
or the unwavering dedication of a treasure guardian,
fighting to the very last moment? He feels it's all rather romantic.
This piece reimagines the cyclops using Yuan-bao's favorite skull motif,
adorned with the Chinese character "執" (zhí), signifying a tenacious spirit fighting to the end,
a tribute to childhood.
