**American Beaver**
The American Beaver is the largest rodent in North America, inhabiting rivers and wetlands. Beavers possess large, sharp incisors capable of felling trees for sustenance. These felled trees, combined with mud, stones, and branches, are used as building materials to construct dams and lodges that create wetlands. Beavers are known as "ecosystem engineers" because their dams not only help retain water and improve water quality but also create wetland environments that support the survival of numerous wildlife species. During forest fires, beaver wetlands can impede the spread of flames and provide refuge for animals. The organic matter at the bottom of their ponds also stores carbon, effectively contributing to climate change mitigation.
In the 16th century, beavers were heavily hunted for the fur trade. It wasn't until wetlands began to dry up and aquatic species started to disappear that people recognized the importance of beavers. Following reintroduction and restoration efforts, the population of the American Beaver has gradually recovered.
**IUCN Status: Least Concern (LC) Previously Endangered**
