We hope you'll enjoy the profound, ancient blue of lapis lazuli, a stone rich in history.
Lapis lazuli, celebrated for its deep blue hue, was revered in ancient Egypt as the stone of Osiris, god of the sky and underworld. In ancient Rome, Pliny the Elder praised it as "a fragment of the heavens."
The beauty and nobility of this mineral, used as a precious pigment and adornment, traveled along the Silk Road, sometimes traded at prices equivalent to gold.
It is said that Vincent van Gogh mixed lapis lazuli powder with zinc yellow to boldly yet serenely depict the dawn and cypresses, creating his iconic "Starry Night."
This gemstone has also colored the flowers in Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring," national treasures, and Ogata Korin's "Irises" screen.
The ancient lapis lazuli mines of Afghanistan began extraction thousands of years BCE and continue to produce to this day.
Knowing that we can now hold this beauty in our hands because people have admired it, transported it across continents and seas, and passed it down through generations, fills us with a quiet reverence for its mineral beauty and the enduring human affection for this stone throughout history.

■ About Lapis Lazuli
Stone language: Happiness, Good Luck, Divinity, Amulet, Protection, December Birthstone
Lapis lazuli is a semi-precious stone, a complex solid solution primarily composed of lazurite from the sodalite group, with other minerals such as sodalite, haüyne, and nosean from the same group. Its Japanese name is "Ruri." It is a gemstone of deep blue to indigo color, and due to the presence of pyrite grains, it is said to sparkle like the night sky.
Descriptions of its ancient use in adornment can be found in the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Book of Exodus.
It has been utilized as a precious decorative material in items such as the mask of King Tutankhamun, the blue jade belt of the Shosoin Imperial Repository, the metal fittings of the Konjikido (Golden Hall) at Chuson-ji Temple, the coat of arms of the Medici family, and the possessions of Louis XIV.
