A Glimpse of Memory My fondness for walnut shortbread cookies stems from my grandmother. They were her favorite snack, a cherished memory. A small neighborhood store sold them in packs of six for 40 NT dollars. She would carefully take a folded, old 50 NT dollar bill from her coin purse—folded in half, then in half again. I'd eagerly volunteer to buy them for her, because the change would be enough for me to get a pack of Doublemint gum. Grandma's coin purse was old and small, its patterns barely discernible. It carried a faint scent of medicinal balm and menthol, much like the aroma of her clothes. Walnut shortbread was my grandmother's favorite. I like to think I was hers, too.
