Shui Fei Sha, Di Wang Sha, Zi Jin Sha, and Jing Ti Sha are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and manufacturing methods**.
**「Shui Fei Sha」**
**True red, with a slight orange undertone. The surface has a warm, matte finish that will become shinier with wear, forming a patina.**
The manufacturing method involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, stirring with water, allowing it to settle, and then collecting the upper "turbid liquid." After further settling and purification (the "water-grinding" method), the bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried and then pressed using ancient techniques. The cross-section reveals fine, uniform mineral sparkles.
**「Di Wang Sha」**
**Tends towards true red, with a brighter color and higher hardness.**
The manufacturing method involves multiple processes such as crushing, grinding, magnetic separation, water-grinding, and high polishing from natural raw cinnabar ore, followed by ancient pressing techniques. Di Wang Sha has almost no visible mineral sparkles on the surface, but has them internally. The surface is treated with a **high-polishing process** to achieve a metallic luster, especially in sunlight, where the metallic feel is maximized.
**「Zi Jin Sha」**
**Tends towards purplish-red, with slightly lower hardness than Di Wang Sha.**
The manufacturing method involves multiple processes such as crushing, grinding, and screening from natural raw cinnabar ore, but **without the water-grinding purification**. Therefore, the surface is less refined and has scattered, star-like mineral sparkles.
**「Jing Ti Sha」**
**Tends towards purplish-red and is translucent.**
Large cinnabar particles are directly chipped from cinnabar ore. The crystals are clearly visible on the surface, appearing translucent under light and emitting a fluorescent red glow.

**> Cinnabar**
In the earliest written records, cinnabar was known by a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is a pictograph, representing an ancient mine shaft where minerals were extracted. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying something extracted from a mine shaft. This "something" is cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dān shā, vermilion sand) became known as cinnabar. "丹" and "朱" describe the color, while "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregular granular minerals.
The color of cinnabar is fade-resistant. Chinese calligraphy and painting are known as "丹青" (dān qīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is an indispensable component of pigments, and the "Eight Treasures Seal Ink," a traditional ink, is primarily made of cinnabar.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that have absorbed the essence of the sun and moon. It absorbs the pure energy of heaven and earth, thus possessing a strong positive magnetic field. We can observe that while jade feels cool in the hand, cinnabar feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in Taoist rituals for drawing talismans, consecrating objects, warding off evil, and appeasing malevolent spirits. Cinnabar has long been regarded as a supreme item for enhancing luck, changing destiny, suppressing malevolence, driving away evil, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of good fortune and prosperity.
The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Herbal Medicine) lists cinnabar as a superior substance, often used in medicinal treatments to calm the spirit, detoxify, and alleviate insomnia and excessive dreaming.
For us living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar artifacts can also help cultivate self-discipline, nurture the eyes, and soothe the heart.
**> Identification**
**All cinnabar products in our store are high-content cinnabar with a substantial weight. You can use the following methods for identification:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat with an intermediary object. It is generally not recommended to directly burn finished products as the time and extent cannot be controlled. If it turns black after prolonged heating, it cannot be restored.)
>. True cinnabar can draw orangey-red lines on paper. (To avoid damaging the aesthetic of the finished product, please choose an inconspicuous area to draw the line, or use the complimentary bead for testing.)
**> Care**
**If cinnabar jewelry has no metal or plant-based accessories (such as wood, bamboo, bodhi seeds...), it can be lightly exposed to water, but prolonged soaking is not recommended as it will affect the luster.**
**Braided cord styles are not recommended to get wet. After washing, dry thoroughly before wearing, as wearing damp cords can lead to excess moisture, which is not beneficial for the body.**
1. Avoid Corrosion
Cinnabar is a mineral and insoluble in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can corrode cinnabar.
2. Avoid Contact with Metal
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling or blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid High Temperatures
The mercury sulfide component in cinnabar only releases at 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as the cinnabar jewelry is kept away from high-temperature environments, it can be worn with confidence.
4. Avoid Collisions with Hard or Sharp Objects
Cinnabar is hard but brittle, so take care to prevent drops.
5. How to Clean
If your cinnabar appears dirty, do not soak it in water, as this can alter its original luster! You can wipe it several times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and let it air dry for a while.
6. Oiling for Maintenance
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product, allowing the surface to absorb the oil, making it more lustrous and clear. If you apply oil and then seal it in a brocade box, you can wrap it in a common plastic film to prevent the oil from staining the brocade box lining.
7. Frequent Handling
Frequently handle the cinnabar jewelry worn on your body with your hands, allowing a thin layer of oil to adhere to the surface. Over time, it will appear more ancient and elegant.
The actual product is more delicate and beautiful than the photos.
