About the "Elongation Manuscript" Series In astronomical measurement, "elongation" is a way to describe the position of celestial bodies. It is the angle formed between the Earth, the Sun, and other planets when viewed from Earth. When celestial bodies reach certain specific elongations, they are given special names: "Greatest Elongation," "Conjunction," "Opposition," and "Quadrature." These are the specialized terms depicted in the illustrations. For this series, we have rendered common diagrams of the relative positions of solar system planets during elongation in the style of early modern European manuscripts. This fusion of significant scientific concepts with the classical aesthetic of manuscripts evokes the initial imagination of those who first explored and studied planetary astronomical phenomena.
