Peter Pan, Wendy, Captain Hook, the crocodile who ate the clock, pirates, mermaids, and the Lost Boys who never wanted to grow up—these characters from the story wove many childhood dreams. Every boy wishes he were Peter Pan, and every girl wishes she were Wendy, embarking on adventures together. PETER PAN is the most famous play by Scottish novelist and playwright James Matthew Barrie (1860–1937). This can be considered a great work dedicated to children. Why do we say this? Because in 1929, J.M. Barrie, who could have earned substantial royalties from this work, donated the copyright of Peter Pan to a children's hospital in London, hoping the royalties would be used to help children. Some say the prototype for Peter Pan was his older brother, David. David tragically died in a skating accident just before his 14th birthday, around Peter Pan's age. The subtitle "the boy who wouldn't grow up" hints at David's life, forever frozen at thirteen. David was his mother Margaret’s favorite child, and her grief after his death was immense. J.M. sought to comfort his mother by stepping into his brother's shoes, even wearing David's clothes and mimicking his whistling (Peter Pan is also known to whistle). # As long as children are joyful, innocent, and carefree, they can fly to Neverland. # This edition is illustrated, with a few illustrations interspersed throughout the chapters.
