"Jiao Tai" refers to the combination of different colored clays. Patterns are pieced together with different colored clays into a long cylindrical shape, much like assembling a decorative sushi roll. When sliced into individual pieces, you get several slices of clay with similar patterns, which are then molded into a dish. Vessels made using the Jiao Tai technique have distinctive characteristics. The pattern appears on both the front and back surfaces. Due to the way it's crafted, the patterns undergo natural deformation during the process of being patted and rolled flat, resulting in a delightfully skewed and swirling transformation, as if a checkerboard were twisting!
Made with Japanese porcelain clay, fired at 1230°C.
