This is a baked flower vase made from coarse red ceramic clay that gives it the feel of earthenware.
The pottery studio in Fukuoka that I work with fires pottery in a climbing kiln once a year.
A climbing kiln is a type of wood-fired kiln that uses firewood to heat the pot without using electricity, kerosene, or gas.
The temperature inside the furnace reaches as high as 1,300°C, and as the molten glaze gets splashed with wood ash and the flames hit the base material, each piece takes on a pattern that cannot be controlled by human hands.
The firing process takes more than a week, from firing to taking the clay out of the kiln.
The flavor that resides in each and every piece is truly exceptional, and speaks to the power of the flame and the hard work and experience of the people who bring it out.
This vase was born from all that effort. It was fired in December 2024.
Although the colors are subdued, the palm-sized size and plump, round shape make them very cute, and the simple, small flowers really stand out.
The inside is glazed, but the outside is unglazed and fired.
The metallic luster that appears on the rustic clay surface is unique to climbing kilns.
The areas directly exposed to the flame turn a burnt color, adding depth to the atmosphere of the piece.
Furthermore, since ceramics are inherently water-absorbent, we apply a waterproofing agent to prevent water from getting into the material.
We have confirmed that by using this waterproofing agent, no water will seep out for approximately 40 hours, however, there is a possibility that a small amount of evaporated water may come out from the bottom, making the area feel slightly damp.
If this bothers you, you may be able to use the product safely by placing a cloth mat underneath.
Using various glazes and clays, I create a wide variety of pottery in different colors and shapes, searching for the best combinations.
It is impossible to create two identical pieces, so although they may look similar, each piece is unique.
I would be very happy if you could find your favorite.
Please enjoy the unique taste and texture of tableware baked over a wood fire.
