Water-milled sand, Imperial sand, Purple-gold sand, and Crystal sand are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **primary distinctions lie in color, texture, hardness, and manufacturing methods**.
**「Water-milled Sand」**
**A true red, with a slight orange undertone. Its surface possesses a warm, matte finish that will gradually develop a lustrous patina with wear.**
The manufacturing process involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, mixing it with water, allowing it to settle, and collecting the upper "turbid liquid." This liquid is then allowed to settle again (the water-milling purification process). The resulting cinnabar mud at the bottom is air-dried and then formed using ancient pressing techniques. Even upon cross-section, uniform, fine mineral sparkle particles can be observed within.
**「Imperial Sand」**
**Possesses a more vibrant, true red hue and a higher degree of hardness.**
Its production involves multiple stages of purification from natural raw cinnabar ore, including **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water-milling/high polishing**, followed by ancient pressing methods. Imperial sand typically lacks surface mineral sparkle, though it is present internally. The exterior is treated with a **high-polishing** process to achieve a metallic sheen, especially under sunlight, enhancing its metallic character.
**「Purple-Gold Sand」**
**Features a purplish-red color and is slightly less hard than Imperial sand.**
Its production involves multiple steps from natural raw cinnabar ore, such as **crushing/grinding/screening**, but **without the water-milling purification**. Consequently, its surface is less refined and exhibits scattered small mineral sparkle particles, creating a "starry sky" effect.
**「Crystal Sand」**
**Appears purplish-red and is translucent.**
These are large cinnabar particles directly chipped from cinnabar ore. Crystal-like particles are clearly visible on the surface, and under light, each particle is transparent, emitting a fluorescent red glow.
**> Spring Plowing, Autumn Harvest**
**All that unfolds gracefully, all that is poetic, all that is beautiful in this world, often happens naturally, much like the changing seasons.**
**Learn to slow down, clear your mind, approach life with gentleness, revere the power of time, and allow everything to grow organically. Like a tree, grow with focus and without fear, developing clear rings.**
**Our craftsmanship is precisely this!!**
**> Cinnabar**
The earliest documented mention of cinnabar in Chinese literature uses a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is a pictographic character representing an ancient mine shaft, with a dot in the middle of the "well" character, signifying the extraction of a mineral from a mine. This mineral is cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dān shā) became known as "朱砂" (zhū shā). "丹" and "朱" describe the color, while "砂" describes its granular, irregular mineral form.
Cinnabar's color is enduring. Chinese calligraphy and painting are known as "丹青" (dān qīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is also an indispensable component of "eight-treasure ink paste," a traditional pigment.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that have absorbed the essence of the sun and moon, thus possessing the pure energy of heaven and earth. Cinnabar exhibits a strong positive magnetic field. Unlike jade, which feels cool to the touch, cinnabar held in the hand feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been integral to Taoist practices such as drawing talismans, consecrating objects, warding off evil, and pacifying negative energies. Cinnabar has long been revered as a supreme item for attracting good fortune, transforming luck, pacifying malevolent forces, dispelling evil, inviting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of great fortune and prosperity, along with peace and health.
The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior herb, frequently used in medicinal treatments for its properties in calming the spirit, detoxifying, and alleviating insomnia and excessive dreaming.
For us living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar artifacts can also serve to cultivate character, soothe the eyes, and nurture the heart.
**> Authentication**
**All cinnabar products in our collection are high-content cinnabar with a substantial weight. You may use the following methods for authentication:**
. Burning cinnabar will cause it to turn black. (Please heat it indirectly. It is generally not recommended to directly burn finished products, as controlling the time and area is difficult. Once blackened by prolonged exposure, it cannot be restored.)
. Genuine cinnabar can draw an orangey-red line on paper. (To avoid damaging the aesthetic of finished products, please choose an inconspicuous area for marking, or use the complimentary bead provided.)
**> Care**
**If cinnabar jewelry does not have metal or organic components (such as wood, bamboo, bodhi seeds, etc.), it can be exposed to water in moderation, but prolonged immersion is not advisable as it can affect its luster.**
**It is not recommended to get the braided cord wet. After cleaning, allow it to air dry before wearing, as damp cords can lead to excessive moisture, which is not beneficial for the body.**
1. Avoid Corrosives
Cinnabar is a mineral and is insoluble in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can corrode cinnabar.
2. Avoid Contact with Metal Objects
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling or blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid High Temperatures
The mercuric sulfide component of cinnabar only releases at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as cinnabar jewelry is kept away from high-temperature environments, it can be worn with confidence.
4. Avoid Collisions with Hard or Sharp Objects
Cinnabar has high hardness but is brittle; handle with care to prevent drops.
5. How to Clean
If you find your cinnabar is dirty, do not soak it in water, as this can alter its original brilliance! You can gently wipe it several times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and let it air dry.
6. Oiling for Maintenance
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product, allowing the surface to absorb the oil and become more lustrous and clear. If applying oil, sealing it in a brocade box with a layer of plastic wrap can prevent the oil from staining the brocade lining.
7. Frequent Handling
Regularly handle the cinnabar jewelry worn on your person with your hands. This allows a very thin layer of oil to adhere to the surface, giving it an antique and elegant appearance over time.
The actual item is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
