▎What are Pearls?
Pearls are primarily composed of a protein substance and layers of calcium carbonate platelets. The protein matrix guides the formation and arrangement of these platelets. Structurally, the calcium carbonate can be in the form of aragonite, calcite, or a combination of both.
▎Can I wear pearls while showering?
Pearls are not harmed by water, as they grow in aquatic environments. However, pearls are sensitive to chemicals. Genuine pearls are organic gemstones, and substances found in soaps, detergents, and impurities encountered during showering can diminish their luster. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid wearing pearls while bathing. Light contact with water is acceptable; simply gently wipe the pearls with a soft cloth afterward. Avoid drying with a hairdryer or exposing them to direct sunlight, as heat can also damage their luster.
▎Three Things You Must Never Do to Pearls
1. Avoid Contact with Chemicals
Pearls are sensitive to acidic and alkaline substances, including cosmetics, skincare products, and perfumes. Please allow all skincare and makeup products to be fully absorbed by the skin before wearing pearls.
2. Avoid Impact with Hard Objects
Pearls have a relatively low hardness, so try to avoid collision with hard objects to prevent surface scratches or damage.
3. Avoid Heat Exposure
Exposure to direct sunlight or proximity to heat sources can cause pearls to discolor or lose their luster.
▎How to Care for My Pearls
It is recommended to gently wipe the surface of your pearls with a soft cloth after each wear. Store pearl jewelry individually in a pouch or zip-lock bag to prevent collision and friction with other jewelry.
Pearls are also not suited for prolonged storage in overly humid or dry environments. If your storage environment is humid, take out your pearl jewelry and gently wipe it with a dry soft cloth at least once a month. If the environment is excessively dry, gently wipe the pearls with a slightly damp soft cloth every month and allow them to air dry naturally before storing.
