|Coin Information|
The Hong Kong government first minted the half-dollar coin in 1866, which contained 90% silver. From 1890 onwards, the silver content was reduced to 80%. In 1905, the Hong Kong government ceased the production of the half-dollar coin.
In 1951, the Hong Kong government reintroduced the fifty cents coin, but it was minted using a cupronickel alloy, with the coin's color remaining silver. One side of the coin featured the portrait of King George VI, who was reigning at that time (only the 1951 fifty cents coin had the portrait of King George VI), and the other side displayed the denomination "Hong Kong Fifty Cents." Starting from 1958, the fifty cents coin was minted with the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
In 1971, the fifty cents coin transitioned from a plain edge to a milled edge for security purposes. In 1977, the coin's composition changed to a brass-nickel alloy, marking the end of the "silver colour fifty cents era."
