The listing features two beautiful antique brooches, that are made of gold plated sterling silver - this is silver covered with a thin layer of gilding, usually 12 karat or 14 karat. You can also find the term "vermeil". During the Second World War America had not enough base metal for the production of costume jewelry. Because all available metal went to the needs of the Army and its use was strictly regulated. Therefore, most of the jewelry of the 1940s was made of sterling silver.
Both brooches are signed "Jewelry by Jordan" - this is the trademark of the American company R.M.Jordan & Co, which worked in 1943-1947. From the advertisement of Jewelry by Jordan, we can judge that they had made jewelry from sterling silver and goldfield. It is also known that their office was located in New York at a very "fashionable address": 5th Avenue.
