This signet ring pendant, dating back to the 1820s Georgian era in England, is crafted from 9k gold cased metal with a carnelian intaglio. Gold cased, also known as rolled gold, was invented in Birmingham, England, in 1785. Unlike gold filled, which was invented in the US and uses heat and pressure simultaneously to encase the base metal in gold, gold cased involves soldering gold onto the base metal (typically brass or silver) before mechanically pressing and rolling the two metals together. Jewelry made with this technique features a layer of gold that encases the exterior like a shell, offering greater durability than gold plating. The pendant is small yet exquisitely detailed, with a highly decorative and rich silhouette. The intaglio is made of warm, translucent white carnelian, meticulously engraved with a complete sprig of forget-me-nots, including its signature five-petaled bloom, accompanied by buds and delicate serrated leaves.
