Shen Zhenlin, courtesy name Fengchi, was a native of Wu County, Jiangsu. He served in the imperial painting academy during the Xianfeng era (mid-19th century). He excelled at portraiture and was also skilled in painting flowers, birds, and landscapes. His reputation was high, and Empress Dowager Cixi once bestowed upon him a plaque inscribed with "Master of Capturing Likeness" in her own hand.
