It typically presents a spherical shape, with colors ranging from dark green to grayish-green. Mature specimens often produce offsets, and they have fibrous root systems. Adorned with 2-8 spines, its tubercles are arranged along the ribs. A distinguishing feature of the Saint Bernard's Head cactus is its less pronounced rib segmentation, resembling a smooth, green dumpling with spines inserted. It usually has fewer ribs, with 5 ribs being its characteristic feature, though variations with 4 or 3 ribs exist. Fewer ribs are considered more precious and rare, thus commanding a higher price. This particular specimen is a rare and sought-after four-ribbed variety, which explains its higher price. The most common form has 5 ribs; those with more than 5 ribs are more likely to be hybrids. | Care Tips | The Saint Bernard's Head cactus prefers full sun or partial shade and should be placed in a well-ventilated area, planted in a well-draining medium. Summer is its growing season, during which watering should be increased, while watering should be reduced or stopped in winter. This genus (Echinocereus) varieties have a higher demand for fertilizer, so it's recommended to provide ample fertilizer to promote growth. These plants establish roots well and grow vigorously. Offsets from branching plants can be easily propagated. However, they are also frequently cultivated through seeds, with seedlings appearing in about 3-4 weeks.
