Among the variations in color, the most significant feature of a gemstone is "play-of-color," found in opals. Opal, derived from the Latin word "opalus," meaning "to collect the beauty of gemstones," is world-renowned for its magical and beautiful play-of-color. It is also a symbol of nobility and status. The famous English playwright Shakespeare once described opal as "this miracle, the queen of gems." Its colors are incredibly diverse, exhibiting different hues when viewed from various angles. Each piece of opal is unique, making it highly collectible. Opal varieties include black opal, white opal (crystal opal), fire opal, and boulder opal. Opal is composed of a structure of silica spheres, which are invisible to the naked eye and can only be seen under an electron microscope. These color variations are caused by diffraction and interference. It's a complex concept, essentially the interplay of light with the gaps between these spherical structures! **Opal Care & Storage** If you have purchased natural opal or pearls, please take special care to avoid excessively humid environments or drastic temperature fluctuations. Both temperature and humidity can accelerate the decomposition or oxidation of organic gemstones. Due to their hardness and formation, please also avoid hot springs and hot baths, as well as products containing cleaning agents. Opal is a delicate gemstone that requires a bit of moisture for maintenance. Therefore, we do not include desiccants in the storage pouch. Like other gemstones, it should not be worn during baths or when visiting hot springs. Do not use a silver polishing cloth to clean opals; use a clean, dry cloth or a slightly damp cloth. We will provide a jewelry polishing cloth. After wearing, gently wipe the ring clean and store it in the gemstone pouch. For all-natural gemstone and metal jewelry, it is not recommended to wear them in hot springs or during baths, as chemicals can cause adverse reactions. Avoid direct contact with perfumes and bleach. Do not store jewelry in bathrooms or kitchens, as this can accelerate oxidation. For sterling silver or gold-filled jewelry, when not in use, try to minimize exposure to moisture and air. Wipe clean with a dry cloth or the provided polishing cloth, then store in a PVC zipper bag. Each piece of jewelry should be stored separately to prevent scratches from contact with other jewelry or hard objects. The zipper bags already contain imported Japanese desiccants. **Natural Stone Inclusions** The natural stones used in NOW Design Studio are collected from around the world, each one unique, and usually available as a single product. These are specially selected natural stones, and we showcase their colors from different angles and under various lighting conditions for our clients. Natural stones may contain internal impurities (inclusions), which are unavoidable. If this is a concern, we advise against purchasing.
