The reason for its rarity is the time and cost involved. Despite this, we forgo cheaper saddle-stitching because in Taiwan's climate, staples can rust. Furthermore, thread binding offers superior durability and a more comfortable writing experience without snagging. | Characteristics of RN Water-Resistant Paper: Enjoy the feel of paper with water resistance----- During research, various situations arise—like jotting down recipes in a damp kitchen, accidentally spilling coffee while comparing different brews, or being caught in a sudden rain shower while documenting nature outdoors. For these reasons, we selected a rather unique water-resistant paper for our inner pages. The Research Notes (hereafter referred to as RN) water-resistant paper stands apart from similar products. While waterproof notebooks already exist on the market, we found their plastic-like texture and excessive smoothness, which made pen control difficult, to be less than ideal for the writing experience. With ballpoint pens, if the notebook was closed for a while, the ink could transfer to the opposite page, hindering readability. Some waterproof papers have been improved to feel more like traditional paper. However, these papers cannot be used with water-based inks, ruling out fountain pens and water-based markers. This leaves only pencils and ballpoint pens, limiting the joy of writing for the user. RN's water-resistant paper, on the other hand, provides the authentic writing feel of paper. How do we differentiate between water-resistant and waterproof? Our definition is as follows: Waterproof paper does not absorb water, allowing any liquid on the surface to be completely shaken off. Water-resistant paper absorbs some water, but only the surface layer gets wet, not the entire sheet. Even when wet, it remains tear-resistant and won't be easily damaged by water. Since only the surface gets wet, it also dries much faster. While the paper may curl slightly upon drying, folding it gently can help flatten it. | Five Key Features of RN Water-Resistant Paper Those familiar with paper properties know that achieving all these conditions simultaneously is nearly impossible, as some of these features are inherently contradictory. However, the paper used in RN water-resistant notebooks defies conventional expectations, making it the world's first notebook to possess all five of these characteristics: Possesses a degree of water resistance Usable with all types of writing instruments Provides the writing feel of paper Paper is strong and tear-resistant Resists smudging and bleed-through Below is a table to help you compare the characteristics of similar papers on the market: (◉: Excellent, ◯: Good, △: Fair) Writing Instruments Usable with RN Water-Resistant Paper: Any writing instrument can be used. RN paper is also excellent for fountain pen use. It offers the same feather-resistant properties as high-quality writing paper, with the added remarkable benefit of almost no bleed-through. We even tested it with oil-based markers, known for severe bleed-through, and RN water-resistant paper held up without any show-through. (See Figure 8) It can be used with any type of writing instrument. We've even used it for watercolor painting, a feat no other so-called waterproof/water-resistant paper can claim. In practical application, if you choose waterproof fountain pen ink, after writing and once the ink dries, the lines will not smudge when exposed to water (Note: Effectiveness depends on the specific waterproof ink used).
