The roller coaster coasters feature maze-like indentations that, in addition to serving the purpose of providing some friction grip when you place your drink on one of them, also allow you to play the classic maze game. When condensation forms on your drink, it drips into the coaster's grooves, and that drop of water becomes the object you have to rescue from the maze, just like the steel ball in the original game.
The coasters feature a gradient of blue, echoing the different shades of water around the world. The designers were inspired by the preciousness and scarcity of water; the roller coaster coasters offer a way to think about and appreciate this important everyday resource.
The roller coaster coaster was designed by Hui Zheng for a design collaboration between MoMA and the School of Visual Arts.
