Not only the two quality Kimono is used, but black collar+lining on the edge of the pocket and deep blue buttons calm the pattern clash elegantly. /Oshima Tsumugi/ Along with Persian carpets, Gobelin tapestries and Oshima Tsumugi silk pongee is one of the world's three great textiles. Its historical record can be traced back to the Nara period, 1,300 years ago, and the textile is still produced in various locations in Oshima island (one of Amami islands) in Kagoshima pref. It is recognized as “Authentic Amami Oshima Tsumugi.” The unique dying method uses the Amami's iron-rich natural mud as a dye. This makes the silk threads into beautiful and luminous black. After being taken off the loom, each plain weave textile has a unique and detailed graphical pattern made of over a million dots dyed onto each single silk thread before they are set onto the loom. It takes more than six months to produce the final product through over 40 processes. Authentic Amami Oshima Tsumugi has unique features distinctive from any other textile. This UMUI shirt has purposely no yoke at the back shoulder. The authentic Kimono has it’s own elegance of the split back from the collar to the bottom hem. That is a secret of the beautiful movement of the silk Kimono that always has the original sewing method of the back. It is not just a uycycled sustainable clothing, but it has a human upcycled sustainability too, sewn by over 50years established skilled local seamstresses Machiko.K using her wisdom and special taste. She wouldn’t waste both fabric and history of artisan work of Kimono as much as possible. She has a warm respect for vintage works and former Kimono seamstresses. Each item has so much ingenious work in various corners of the shirts such as sleeves, front inner, collar, the pattern matching/ asymmetrically matching, patch working, any possibilities to save the material is her speciality. So please understand that there might be small defects usually vintage garments have from a long storage. However we thoroughly select acceptable materials for the worth of making UMUI shirts. We use recyclable material for gift box and packaging material. We aim to be eco-friendly as much as we can for our earth.
