My recent journey to Kyoto was filled with wonderful encounters. It was a chance to rediscover the essence of living well and to witness the ancient capital's dedication to preserving and innovating traditional culture and crafts. What captured my heart at first sight were the kisslock pouches meticulously handmade by a kimono artisan. Mr. Nakamura, a craftsman with a gentle demeanor and elegant presence, has retired from the world of kimono making. However, he continues to create kisslock pouches using the kimono fabrics he cherishes.
【Premium Kimono Tsumugi Series】
The spirit of dedication poured into his craft is evident in every detail and material choice. This particular pouch features Kyoto's exquisite 'Kanoko Shibori' tie-dye. Named for its resemblance to the spots on a fawn, the intricate hand-dyeing process is exceptionally complex, resulting in unique color patterns. Consequently, these pieces are extremely rare, making each one a once-in-a-lifetime find.
Mr. Nakamura's kisslock pouches stand apart from those made with synthetic fibers or cotton commonly found elsewhere. Even accessories, he believes, should be crafted with the quality of fine jewelry, able to withstand scrutiny. He uses only the finest materials, advising, "Treat it gently, and the texture will soften beautifully over time."
It's clear that Kyoto residents truly appreciate quality. It's no wonder they take such pride in their city. We are grateful to Mr. Nakamura for agreeing to specially craft a batch for us. I must admit, compared to the myriad of other kisslock pouches available, the initial price might seem a bit steep. At first, I was drawn in by its appearance, not fully considering the premium kimono fabric or the intricate kisslock mechanism, which I took for granted. But after receiving and using it, I truly understood its value. With every opening and closing, I find myself marveling at it, growing more fond of it each day. If you have the chance to own one, you'll understand why it's considered an art piece. It will undoubtedly inspire you to collect more!
