This pair of stainless steel earrings features exquisitely crafted simulated southern Chinese triangular Zongzi, which is a specialty of the Lingnan region and a traditional auspicious food believed to ward off dragons.
Zhongzi originated from ancient Chinese worship culture, with a history dating back to the Spring and Autumn Period or even earlier. Initially called "jiaoshu" or "tongzi," they were originally used to worship deities and ancestors. Later, as they spread to various regions, they incorporated elements commemorating Qu Yuan, a poet from the Chu state during the Warring States period, evolving into a custom eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival, and also carrying the meaning of "wrapping food in plant leaves" to ward off dragons. By the Tang Dynasty, Zhongzi had become a popular snack, and during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, they became even more widespread as an auspicious food. There are many varieties of Zhongzi ; in the south, they are mainly triangular, traditionally made primarily with white rice (though millet, taro, corn, sorghum, and other grains ground into powder are also used), wrapped in leaves, and filled with ingredients such as red bean paste, mung beans, red beans, black-eyed peas, soybeans, sausage, salted duck eggs, peanuts, chestnuts, corn, shiitake mushrooms, dried shrimp, and pork, etc., and are boiled or steamed, making them a specialty of the Lingnan region.
