"Preserving Craftsmanship, Inheriting Skills, Reviving Small Shops"
Many old shops and traditional crafts are forced to close due to urban redevelopment, rapid economic transformation, and high rental costs, leading to the loss of community economies and historical culture. REstore establishes social enterprise physical stores to bring small shops back to the community; the closure of a storefront does not mean the end of an old shop.
- Background of the Old Shop -
Jordan Old Shop - Master Mak Kam-sing of Kiu Ka Advertising
The plastic signs on the windshields of public light buses (Red Vans) display destinations, intermediate stops, and other information. In the past, everything was handwritten on these signs, even fares were marked with "Hokma" (traditional Chinese numerals). Master Mak Kam-sing of the old Jordan shop "Kiu Ka Advertising Company" has been involved in advertising design since he was 15. He opened his shop in the 1980s to produce public light bus signs and is now one of the last remaining masters of handwritten public light bus signs in the region. The master is happy to incorporate new elements into traditional products, designing characteristic items like public light bus sign keychains and folders. He also collaborates with REstore to host "Public Light Bus Sign Writing Workshops," allowing participants to unleash their creativity, write their own exclusive signs, and interact with the master to understand this industry that has witnessed Hong Kong's historical changes.
