Collection description
Castiglione (1688-1766 AD), Italian. At the age of nineteen, he became a Catholic Jesuit monk and studied painting and architecture. He came to China at the age of 27 and served as a court painter in the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong dynasties. He was good at painting figures, dogs, horses, flowers and birds. In the painting, there are two red-crowned cranes standing in a corner where pink roses are in full bloom. One is looking back to preen its feathers, and the other is looking back slightly, as if looking at the two young cranes that have not yet had feathers. The vividly painted crane feathers, There are not only hairy details but also a glossy effect. This glossy treatment quality is also reflected in the plants in the painting. Roses and irises are all delicately depicted. The young crane depicted in this painting is not a common painting subject. Emperor Qianlong once wrote a poem The article describes the young crane and mentions that "the young crane has just emerged from its shell and has the spirit of flying clouds." The upright posture of the young crane in the painting may be an echo.
