Winner of the 2017 Golden Pin Design Award.
Centering on the core concept of "companionship" and the fusion of Eastern and Western elements in pastries over [kuoyuanye]'s 150 years, the design begins with "Gao" (糕), Taiwan's earliest dessert. [kuoyuanye] and designer Nieh Chen-Lin have jointly created the "Accompanying Bites Time - [kuoyuanye] 150th Anniversary Commemorative Gift Box." From the flavor, shape, and packaging of the Gao, to the carrier bag and even the spatial display, "Gao" serves as the central design element. The aim is to reinterpret the taste memories of local "pastry culture" through Taiwan's first designer pastry.
The flavors are themed around "Beans + Tea"—"Beans" representing traditional Taiwanese pastry ingredients, and "Tea" stemming from the culture of enjoying pastries with tea. Local Taiwanese red beans and peanuts are paired with Western and Japanese beverages—black tea and matcha—in a 3:7 ratio of beans to tea, resulting in two flavors: Matcha Red Bean and Peanut Black Tea. In terms of pastry shape, breaking away from traditional single-sided molds, a custom mold was developed to allow each piece of Gao to feature layered flavors and Chinese characters on both the top and bottom. This creates exquisite double-circle shaped pastries, which extend to the display design. The "two by two companionship" symbolizes the pairing of beans and tea, as well as the close bond between [kuoyuanye] and Taiwan.
The main visual features the double-circle Gao pastry. The carrier bag is printed in different colors on each side, echoing the dual-layered flavors of the accompanying tea pastries. The upper layer of the gift box contains the accompanying tea pastries, while the lower layer holds [kuoyuanye]'s classic pastries. The inner lining is designed to present the pastries in a "serving platter" style. The "Gao" is packaged with a premium aesthetic, using binding papers specially selected from Japan's Takeo Paper and local Taiwanese paper mills. The warm, earthy color palette extends to the 150th-anniversary themed display, fully showcasing the culture of enjoying pastries with tea and the "Beans | Tea" companionship, conveying the sentiment of gifting and Taiwanese culture.
