Wen Chang-Shun (1925-2005) was a prominent Taiwanese painter specializing in the Nihonga style, hailing from Taoyuan. Following World War II, he studied "Toyo-ga" under the tutelage of Hsu Shen-Chou (1918-2005) and was a founding member of the "Green Water Art Association" in 1990. "Backstage Corner," completed in 1953, is a Nihonga portrait by Wen Chang-Shun. The subjects are sixth-grade students from Zhongshan Elementary School, where his wife taught. The painting depicts a scene from a school fair, with students adorned in headpieces crafted from silver foil, ready to join the festivities. The delicate linework used to outline the figures reveals his mastery of the "baimiao" (outline) technique. The interplay between cool tones of black, brown, and green, and warm hues of white, yellow, and red, creates an elegant and gentle color palette.
