Sashiko stitching, a traditional form of hand sewn embroidery originated in ancient Japan dating back to Edo period (1600s - 1800s). It is typically done with a white thread on an indigo fabric. The patterns of Sashiko mainly come from traditional Japanese and Chinese motifs appearing in nature and in folklore.
Commonly used among the working class and peasants, Sashiko is born from the necessity of conserving and repairing garments when resources were very limited to people with lower social status. People applied Sashiko so as to reinforce the strengthen and warmth of fabric. Beside of its functionality, the aesthetic part of Sashiko gradually gained attention from people and has been developed into a valuable form of art in Japanese culture.
Over the years, Sashiko has become popular in the world as beautiful Japanese traditional arts and crafts. Impressed by the beauty of Sashiko, we try to combine the Sashiko technique with leather craft, with a hope to convey the loveliness of Sashiko to every one.
