Lü Ji (circa 1429-1505), courtesy name Tingzhen, hailed from Yin County, Zhejiang. He initially studied bird-and-flower painting under Bian Wenjin (15th century) and later widely emulated the famous artists of the Tang and Song dynasties, thereby refining his craft. During the Hongzhi reign of Emperor Xiaozong of the Ming Dynasty (1488-1505), he served alongside Lin Liang (circa 1424-post 1500) in the Renzhi Hall, holding the position of Commander of the Imperial Guard. This painting depicts a scene in early spring, with apricot blossoms blooming by the water and willow branches swaying in the breeze. Mynahs and various small birds rest and fly among them. Schools of fish swim in the stream, and on the opposite bank, two pairs of mandarin ducks are visible, creating a rich and pleasing landscape. Although the painting lacks the artist's signature and seal, its composition and brushwork carry the spirit and style of Lü Ji, leading scholars to believe it was created by a court painter who inherited Lü Ji's artistic legacy.
