A French Centennial Fashion Magazine: La Mode Illustrée, Cover Color Plate Edition
La Mode Illustrée was a French fashion magazine published from 1860 to 1937, headquartered in Paris.
It was one of the largest fashion magazines in the world and the most significant in French fashion history during the latter half of the 19th century, akin to a French counterpart of Britain's The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine. It is also recognized as the first weekly fashion magazine, essentially representing one of the most mainstream fashion publications in Europe during the late 19th century.
This magazine is the most exquisite print publication of French ladies' portraits I've ever collected. The artwork is delicate, with clear contrasts in color and light, rendering the figures with remarkable dimensionality. The attention to detail in the clothing is particularly striking, and the overall layout is beautiful, even indicating the year of publication.
Its primary content featured illustrations of fashionable clothing for dressmakers, alongside other topics such as music reviews, homekeeping tips, and recipes.
