■ About Lapis Lazuli
Stone Language: Happiness, Good Fortune, Divine Status, Amulet, Protection, December Birthstone
Lapis lazuli is a semi-precious stone that is a complex solid solution, primarily composed of lazurite from the sodalite group, with the addition of other minerals such as sodalite, haüyne, and nosean. Its Japanese name is "Ruri." It is a gemstone of deep blue to indigo color, with a starry sparkle due to included pyrite grains.
Ancient texts such as the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Book of Exodus describe its use for warding off evil and for adornment.
It has been utilized as a precious decorative material in King Tutankhamun's mask, the jeweled belt of the Shōsōin Imperial Treasury, the metal fittings of the Konjikidō (Golden Hall) at Chūson-ji temple, the coat of arms of the Medici family, and the possessions of Louis XIV.
