| Producer Group: Creative Handicrafts | Established in 1984, Creative Handicrafts was founded with the mission to support socially disadvantaged women in the slums of Mumbai, India, who face poverty and seek economic independence. The goal is to foster a self-sufficient and sustainable community that upholds human rights and is free from discrimination based on caste, gender, or religion. Founder Sister Isabel Martin believed that the most effective way to help the poor was by providing employment opportunities. Thus, in 1984, she established Creative Handicrafts, teaching impoverished women how to craft toys, bags, and textiles. We offer training opportunities to women, educating them on everything from garment and fabric production to understanding market dynamics, enabling them to earn a livelihood. Beyond providing employment, we remain actively involved in fair trade initiatives, such as offering sewing skill guidance, operating daycare centers, and supporting children's scholarships. Over the years, numerous women have benefited from the technical training they received. For instance, some have launched their own businesses, while others have found employment with partner companies. Additionally, women who did not pursue tailoring skills have received culinary training and now provide lunches for many office workers in Mumbai as part of a packed lunch catering program. Many women have become the primary financial providers for their families.
