Hand-drawn botanical illustration · Poppy · digital download (no physical item is shipped)
I drew the poppy at the moment it opens — crumpled, fresh, the creases of the bud still in the petals — because that is when the red is most intense and the flower most itself. A poppy that has been open for more than a few hours begins to lose those creases, and by the following day the petals may have fallen; the flower has a life measured in hours rather than days, which is part of what makes the opening moment so worth drawing. Papaver rhoeas grows on disturbed ground: roadsides, harvested fields, the edges of things. The seed can wait in the soil for decades; when the ground is turned, the seeds germinate. That is why poppies appeared in the churned earth of the Western Front after 1914 — the ploughing of war brought up seeds that had been dormant for years.
I drew the open flower and the closed bud beside it, the way they always appear together in a summer field — because they always do, and because the contrast between the crumpled red and the smooth grey-green of the bud is itself the point.
SPECIMEN NOTES
Field poppy (Papaver rhoeas) — slender annual of disturbed ground and arable fields; native to Europe, Asia and North Africa; a wildflower of wheat fields and roadsides
Petal texture: the petals are crumpled when they first open, with the fold lines of the bud still visible; they smooth out over hours — the opening moment is the most intense and most characteristic
Seed dormancy: seeds can remain dormant in soil for decades; germination is triggered by soil disturbance; the appearance of poppies on the Western Front after 1914 was caused by seeds brought up from the subsoil by shell craters and digging
Colour: bright scarlet with a dark blotch at the base of each petal; the blotch is characteristic and species-specific
Remembrance: in northern Europe, the poppy is a symbol of remembrance for the war dead, particularly after the First World War; Flanders fields
Related species: Papaver somniferum (opium poppy) is a different species; P. rhoeas contains no significant alkaloids and is not narcotic
ON THE WALL, OR AS A GIFT
At home this print suits a living room, a bedroom, a Scandinavian or cottagecore wall, or a summer-themed interior. The field poppy in illustration — open flower with crumpled petals beside a closed bud — has a particular quality of captured immediacy: the drawing holds the exact moment of maximum colour, which is also the most fleeting. Against white or pale grey the red is intense and present; in a dark frame it deepens.
As a gift the poppy is for a nature lover, a wildflower gardener, a naturalist, someone with a connection to the First World War or to the landscape of northern France and Belgium, or anyone who finds beauty in the edges of things. It makes a considered birthday present, a thoughtful addition to a summer-themed room, or a meaningful piece for a living room or bedroom wall.

PRINTING RECOMMENDATIONS
Best result: matte or semi-gloss paper. Matte is closest to the feel of the original illustration — the texture reads as hand-drawn rather than digital. Semi-gloss gives slightly richer colour and more contrast.
Paper weight: 200 gsm or heavier for a fine-art feel. Standard 80–90 gsm office paper works fine for a casual print or a test before committing to a frame.
For exceptional quality, look for a local print lab that offers cotton-rag or baryta paper at 240+ gsm — botanical illustration on fine-art paper is close to the look and weight of an original drawing.
The files are sized to print cleanly at both metric (A-series) and US standard sizes without any adjustment. Take the PDF to any print shop and ask for it printed at 100% scale.
SIZE GUIDE
A5 — 14.8 × 21 cm / 5.8 × 8.3 in — desk frame, shelf, or small accent wall

A2 — 42 × 59.4 cm / 16.5 × 23.4 in — large format; feature walls and wide corridors
8 × 10 in (20 × 25 cm) — US standard; sits well with a mat in an 11 × 14 in frame
11 × 14 in (28 × 35.5 cm) — US gallery size; fills a standard frame without a mat

FROM THE STUDIO
Every drawing begins with biological study and close observation — the scientific name, the structure, the feature that makes this species itself. The work follows the tradition of European botanical illustration, where science and art are the same act. From a studio in northern Italy, near Lake Como.
